Zagreb · EUR · Croatian

Hub airports: ZAG, SPU, DBV, PUY · Suggested stay: 710 days

Croatia joined Schengen in 2023 and adopted the euro the same day. The 1,100-mile coast is the prize: Plitvice waterfalls inland, Dubrovnik in the south, Istria's truffles in the north, and a thousand islands in between.

Sail the Dalmatian islands from Split; sunset in Hvar.

Where to go

Dubrovnik
Walk the city walls at 08:00 before cruise crowds; Game of Thrones tour if relevant.
Split
Diocletian's Palace (a working town inside Roman walls); ferry hub for islands.
Hvar
Lavender island, party town; quieter inland villages like Stari Grad.
Plitvice Lakes
16 terraced lakes with waterfalls; book entry tickets in advance.
Rovinj (Istria)
Venetian-style coastal town; truffles inland in Motovun.
Zagreb
Cute capital, often skipped — Upper Town walks, Museum of Broken Relationships.

Best time to visit

Late May–June and September–early October. July–August is sweltering and Dubrovnik becomes a cruise-ship parking lot. Many island restaurants closed November–April.

US-citizen tips

Now uses euros. Cards widely accepted; bring some cash for islands. Tipping 10%. Buy ferry tickets at Jadrolinija or Krilo offices, not from touts.

Local etiquette

Take shoes off in homes. 'Bok' (informal hi) and 'dobar dan' (good day) get you far. Don't bring up the 1990s war casually.

Getting around

Buses are better than trains (Croatia's rail network is limited). FlixBus, Arriva, Autotrans. Ferries via Jadrolinija (slow, cheap, big) and Krilo (fast catamaran).

Common pitfalls

  • Dubrovnik on a cruise day is miserable — check schedule.dubrovnikport.hr.
  • Apartment 'sobe' touts at bus stations: legit but verify location before paying.
  • Plitvice closes when ticket capacity is reached; book online for entry slot.
