Finland

Helsinki · EUR · Finnish, Swedish

Hub airports: HEL, RVN · Suggested stay: 47 days

Finland is sauna culture, Nordic design (Marimekko, Iittala, Alvar Aalto), and Lapland — where Santa officially lives in Rovaniemi. Helsinki is small and walkable. The real magic is going north.

Aurora from a glass igloo in Saariselkä.

Where to go

Helsinki
Suomenlinna fortress, Allas sauna pool, Design District, Oodi library.
Rovaniemi
Santa Claus Village (cross the Arctic Circle), reindeer sleigh rides.
Levi & Saariselkä
Glass igloo aurora resorts and proper winter activities.
Lakeland (Savonlinna)
Summer cottage country; Olavinlinna castle; opera festival in July.

Best time to visit

December–March for aurora and snow (Levi, Saariselkä). June–August for the lake district and 24-hour daylight. Avoid October–November (dark, wet, no snow yet).

US-citizen tips

Sauna etiquette: nude, in single-sex sessions; mixed sessions wear swimwear. Tap water is among the world's best. Tipping minimal. VR trains; sleeper train Helsinki–Rovaniemi is fun.

Local etiquette

Silence is comfortable — Finns don't fill it. Don't 'cheers' awkwardly; just drink. Always shower before sauna.

Getting around

VR Trains, including overnight services to Lapland (book a sleeper cabin). Helsinki public transit via HSL app.

Daily budget (USD)

Midrange

Common pitfalls

  • Northern lights need 3+ nights and luck — don't book a single-night trip and expect them.
  • Helsinki feels small; 1.5 days is plenty before heading north.
  • Reindeer-sausage roadside stops in Lapland — stop, they're great.
