Malta is a tiny Mediterranean archipelago with English as an official language (former British colony) — the smoothest landing for first-time European travelers. Valletta is a baroque/medieval gem; Gozo is the slow-paced sister island; the diving is world-class.

Where to go

Valletta
St John's Co-Cathedral (Caravaggio masterpiece), Upper Barrakka Gardens, Republic Street.
Three Cities
Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua — older than Valletta; ferry across the Grand Harbour.
Mdina
Walled 'Silent City' on a hill; especially good after dark.
Gozo
Slower-paced island; Azure Window collapsed but Dwejra and Ramla Bay shine.
Comino & Blue Lagoon
Postcard-blue water; arrive 09:00 or after 16:00 to dodge crowds.

Best time to visit

April–June and September–October. July–August is intensely hot (95°F) and packed with European holidaymakers. Winters are mild (60°F) and wonderful for sightseeing without crowds.

US-citizen tips

English is everywhere — easiest Schengen for non-language-confident travelers. Euros. Cards accepted; carry some coins for buses. Tipping 10%. Tap water tastes brackish; locals drink bottled.

Local etiquette

Catholic island — modest dress for churches (St John's strictly enforces). Lunch 12:30–14:30. Drive on the LEFT (UK legacy) — surprises many EU visitors.

Getting around

Public buses cover the island cheaply. Ferries to Gozo from Ċirkewwa. Drive on the left — careful.

Daily budget (USD)

Backpacker
$50–$90/day
Midrange
$130–$210/day
Comfort
$290+/day

Common pitfalls

  • Driving on the left + narrow roads + aggressive locals — first day is stressful.
  • Blue Lagoon midday is a chaotic boat-party scene; go early or skip.
  • Hotel beach descriptions can be optimistic — Malta's coast is mostly rocky, not sandy.
